Our curriculum is designed with a holistic approach to firearm education, emphasizing not only the fundamental aspects of handling and operation but also instilling a deep respect for firearm safety and responsibility.

Basic Training

This category is the requirement for private firearm ownership or first-time firearm ownership. This category is also the entry level to intermediate training.

PRIVATE FIREARM OWNERSHIP OR FIRST-TIME FIREARM OWNERSHIP

• 117705: Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act – The entry level for all other Firearm Training.
• 119649: Handle and use a Handgun.
• 119650: Handle and use a Self-loading rifle or carbine.
• 119651: Handle and use a Manually operated rifle.
• 119652: Handle and use a Shotgun.
• 243200: Handle and use a Muzzle-loading firearm.

INTERMEDIATE Training

This category is applicable to someone who is issued with a company firearm. This category is for firearms licensed to a company or institution for “business purposes”.

APPLICABLE TO SECURITY GUARDS AND ANYONE WHO IS ISSUED WITH A COMPANY FIREARM

• 123511: Handle and use a Self-loading rifle or carbine for Business Purposes.
• 123514: Handle and use a Shotgun for Business Purposes.
• 123515: Handle and use a Handgun for Business Purposes.
• 123519: Handle and use a Manually operated rifle for Business Purposes.
• 123516: Supervise Shooting Exercises.
•120487: Use firearms in a Military and Law Enforcement Environment.
• Regulation 21: Firearm compliance testing.

Regulation 21

Firearm compliance testing

Regulation 21 is a compulsory annual refresher course for security personnel issued with company firearms. This training is designed to maintain high standards of firearm safety, competence, and responsible handling. The course includes both theoretical and practical components, ensuring that each officer remains confident and compliant with legal and professional requirements.

Range officer

Supervise Shooting Exercises

Range Officer training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to safely manage and supervise shooting ranges and live-fire environments. By completing this unit standard, candidates qualify as certified Range Officers. The course applies to anyone overseeing shooting activities—whether for business, firearm training, or sport-shooting purposes. Trainees will learn how to run shooting details, enforce range safety rules, and ensure the well-being of all shooters, spectators, and bystanders.

Skills Builder

Basic to advanced

Skills Builder training is a practical, hands-on program designed to help licensed firearm owners improve their control, confidence, and consistency. Offered at various levels, it focuses on real-world firearm handling without the pressure of formal certification. Participants will learn how to properly carry a firearm in a holster, draw and engage targets, and perform efficient magazine changes and malfunction clearances. Ideal for first-time firearm owners and experienced shooters alike, this course builds muscle memory and purpose-driven shooting skills through focused, live-fire exercises.

Step-by-Step Guide to Firearm Training

Becoming a responsible firearm owner involves thorough training and education. Here’s a simple guide to help you through the process of undergoing professional firearm training.

Step 1: Register

Register with a GunCo accredited training provider.

Step 2: Self-Study

Once registered, you will be provided with study material which contain an open book test to prepare you for assessment.

Step 3: Appointment

Schedule an appointment with your training provider for the lecture, closed book assessment and practical shoot.

Step 4: Certificate

Upon successful completion of your firearm training course, you will receive a proficiency certificate along with a Statement of Results (SoR).

Step 5: Competency

Apply for a competency certificate from the South African Police Service (SAPS)
